You would want to check with the GIA and see how many times you are allowed to take the exam, but yes you can take it more than once. A great many people don’t pass it 100% the first time. I recall one girl who had done it many times, like 7+ times and still had not passed. It is really not too difficult to get 100%, you practice on hundreds and hundreds of colored stones so you get the hang of things quite well before the exam.

Yes, the colored stone exam you must get 100% correct – there is no other passing grade.

I was really interested in signing up for the distance learning courses at GIA, however, the 100% to pass has kind of put me off. That’s a HUGE amount of pressure considering the price I would be paying. Are you allowed to retake the test any number of times?

I did went ahead and enrolled myself in the GG course and I decided to do it on campus. So far I think this is one of the best decisions I have made. I have finished with graduate diamonds and is one month into the color stone course. The whole course is intensive but very interesting. I’m so glad I bite the bullet and went through with it. Can’t wait to see what is to come after I finish the course.
